Asbestos survey: what you need to know in Switzerland
The asbestos survey: why and when should it be carried out? Banned in Switzerland since 1989, asbestos is still present in many older buildings.

Asbestos is almost unavoidable in buildings constructed before 1989.
According to Swiss legislation, here are the three main hazardous materials:
• Strongly bonded materials (for example: fiber cement, sealing joints), asbestos content < 20% by weight
• Weakly bonded materials (for example: sprayed coatings, lightweight panels containing asbestos, asbestos cardboard), asbestos content > 40% by weight
• Materials with pure asbestos (for example: braids, gloves), asbestos content 90-100% by weight
The survey is carried out mainly through samples that are then analyzed in a laboratory. This technique is the only way to determine with certainty whether asbestos is present or not.
If asbestos is present, asbestos removal will be entrusted to an expert. The duration of the work will vary depending on the area to be treated, ranging from a few days to several weeks.
Asbestos waste is transported to landfills designated for this purpose:• Type E landfill (formerly bioactive waste DCB)• Type B landfill (formerly inert materials DCMI)
