Homewell presents an overview of the main insurance policies, mandatory or optional, that an owner has the opportunity to benefit from after buying their property.
Building insurance
Mandatory in the majority of cantons, this insurance covers most claims, such as fires, landslides, hail, avalanches, and so on. In short, it protects against natural phenomena.
Liability insurance
If, for example, you negligently injure a third party by dropping an object from your balcony, or if your child breaks your neighbor's window while playing, you will be liable for the damage caused because you are the owner of the property in question. Liability insurance protects you during these events, up to the amount of your choice. If you own an apartment in a condominium (PPE), this insurance is mandatory.
Household contents insurance
It covers damage caused to your movable personal effects, such as the theft or breakage of your household appliances or your furniture. It also covers natural damage, such as water damage or fires.
Earthquake insurance
This event is unfortunately not covered by building insurance, so it is wise to obtain one, by turning to a private insurance company.
Building glass insurance
This insurance protects your glazing only against events of natural origin. If you damage your glazing, for example by dropping an object on it, you will need to turn to glass breakage insurance.
Legal protection insurance
Legal protection insurance allows you to obtain assistance and to be represented by your insurer in the event of legal proceedings, for example during a dispute with your neighbor.
